What happens to the wedding gown after the wedding? Usually, it's sealed into a big, plastic bag, where it is kept forever and ever. It's moved from house to house, takes up plenty of closet space and never sees the light of day.
Some brides hope their daughters will one day wear the dress. But it rarely happens. Styles change. People have different tastes. Did you wear your mum's dress? Would you have even wanted to?
So instead of just sealing the dress away, brides and grooms are taking the option of doing a portrait session that is, a bit brutally, called "Trash the Dress." (The groom doesn't have to trash the rental tux, he can just wear black pants and a white button shirt).
It doesn't have to be exclusively wedding attire either. You can wear any style of formal wear.
Trash the Dress photography uses the elegance and beauty of a bride and her gown against a harsh environment or an artistic background where the subject is strikingly out of place. “It’s that contrast between new and clean, and old and dirty. Images are sometimes playful, dark or haunting, and many involve damage and in some extreme cases, destruction of the wedding dress. Settings can include sandy beaches or forests, brides submerged in mud or water, in a lake, or in an abandonded house or dirty alley and some extremes can include dresses covered in algae or paint. You can trash a dress just about anywhere — you really don’t trash it, you mostly just get it dirty.” The possibilities are limited only by your imagination. And what do you get? Instead of just having conventional wedding portraits, you can get creative portraits in a dramatic or spectacular setting, artistic photographs that you will love for the rest of your life. Many brides think it's better than a bagged dress any day.
